Sweating like hell out here, water is crystal, but i cant touch it.
Anyway, my opinion of Dyneema as a spear line; I had this set up for nearly 15 yrs and cant say i had any problems. I then had the fortunate oppertunity of spending 8 months working with Ryan Burms and he insisted that the mono is better for muzzle wraps etc. I take that advise and run with it. Again spend quite a bit of time with Alan Fraser, same thing mono only. SO i dont quetsion it, I just use it. from my side i cant say, but i take the proffesional advise. Bungy on a reel gun, for me it is just another consumable that i want to do with out. Im not sure.
Crimping Dyneema, interresting, as it is a very solid cord. I would maybe consider using the next size down on the crimping tool, not the 2.0mm. whats it 1.8mm?? I know the Marlin guys use crimps extensively, im sure dyneema may have been crimped some where along the line. If i need to make an eye with Dyneema, 2 options, double bowline (80%) or a BOUY knot ie: figure of 8 fed back on its self.

Donovan Solomon  created a new topic Dyneema knots in the forums.
Just had a look through the article on line. Some back ground into knots, basically the weakest point on a rope / cord is the knot. eg: a bowline reduces the effective breaking strain of a cord to 40%. ie: @ 180kg it will be reduced to 70 - 80kg. The strongest knots are NOT knots. for eg; a Knouds knot (not for spearing, fishing only), check it on youtube, give 100%. so the line breaks before the knot.
The knot shown on the article is basically a rapala knot. That initial over hand knot has a massive effect on reducing the effective breaking strain. BUT in that using Dyneema would a diver actually be able to apply a down rated 100kg of pressure on a rig? probly not.

My personal opinion is a good crimp would also do.

Hi Johann,

I am not sure I like these reports. It makes me naar to sit in JHB knowing that the water is flat and clean. Well, at least we can dream.

Tombeej replied to the topic Re:Smoking and Spearfishing in the forums.
While I am not a smoker, this is what I can offer on the subject.

I've heard from smokers that smoking doesn't affect their diving, except if they have a cigarette directly before a dive - then the negative effect is pronounced. But after 30mins or so of diving they find their lung function normalising again.

I've read studies that smoking doesn't affect your static times at all, even some anecdotal evidence that it might increase your static times slightly.

When it comes to how it affects someone say on a shore dive, having to gun it through the backline, swim against currents, dive for hours, etc., we can look to general knowledge about how smoking affects anyone's ability to maintain levels with any form of higher intensity exercise (i.e. obviously not as good as a non-smoker). Also, recovery times are reduced.

When it comes to lung capacity, here's a quote I found on the web from a surgeon: "I can tell you that there is a tremendous difference in size, elasticity, color, circulation....it is the difference between holding a very squishy stretchy pink structure and a smaller, rubbery somewhat rigid grayish one." I think that says it all in terms of whether smoking limits your potential with regards to lung capacity.

I don't have much info about how it affects the dive reflex, blood gases, etc, so can't offer any comment on smoking vs. deep diving.

My personal opinion is that if you aren't out to break depth or bottom time records, just want to enjoy your spearfishing socially, and have a smoke every now and then, I don't think it's going to impact your diving much at all.

Still, every time I see a diver come back to the beach and light up while still in his suit, it still gives me a little shock - it just looks so wrong to me. But that's just me .

PJ created a new topic Smoking and Spearfishing in the forums.
Hey guys!

Here's quite a topic that I've been wondering about for a while.

I've noticed quite a lot of Spearos who dive quite seriously also smoke. Does smoking have any noticeable effect on breathhold? I like to smoke a cigarette every once in a while if I feel like it (yes, I am aware of all the health hazards and what a bad habit it is etc etc.)

Any smokers/divers who feel like sharing their thoughts as to how it affects your diving?

Please guys, I know it's bad for you and that it obviously poses health risks and so on and so forth. I don't care if you think it's disgusting or whatever, I'm just curious as to the effect on breathhold and diving.

Aaaaand, shoot!

I bought a couple of things from the web whilst I was based in the med, it all came from Denmark or 1 of those scandi countries as my misses was in denmark and was near to her. I personally emailed them about the carbon stereo fins as I was looking for a pair and I was too suspicious of the price, turns out that they are composite's with a carbon fibre layer ontop, needless to say I just bought the real deal from the locals back in DBN.

To get a fibre blade at R1000 is a very good deal. Why are the top end carbons double in price?? Yeah sure Carbon per sheet is 4 times more expensive than fibre.

I have both FreeDivers carbon compo (med) and pure carbon (soft). I definitely feel a dfference with the 2 , the soft pure carbon better. also, i use OMER on the compo and mares RAZOR on the soft and the softs combination is the best finning experience i have ever had. . Hence the med's are for sale.
Johann and i dive quite a bit together so it will be nice to see the Leader fins in action.
