Hi guys,

I’ve read this thread a number of times and have been somewhat reluctant to contribute my 2 cents worth due to “Diver Safety” complexity. You can write a book on the subject. Diver Safety starts at Dive Planning stage which normally includes a Contingency Plan. I’m going to chat to Chris and see if we can start a “DIVER SAFETY” column in the USM so all can benefit from.

Diver safety is not all about SWB prevention, there are other factors which are detrimental to a diver such as cramps … ever suffered a serious calf muscle cramp? It’s so painful it’s debilitating.
Inflation vests … I haven’t seen the new designs but the old inflatable vests resembled the floatation vest used on boats except it had a timer which you could be set before a dive and reset it when you surfaced. The timer was attached to a mini cylinder with compressed air. Once the timer reached the preset time, the seal on the cylinder was ruptured and the vest would inflate thus brining a diver back to the surface. These vest weren’t very successful, especially among the spearos … could you imagine you have this beauty lined up and the timer activates the vest’s inflation just before you squeeze the speargun’s trigger … ( L.o.l.) I think the ocean would be polluted with one more foreign article.

Referring back to the thread, there is a comment which I want to compliment and that is “STEADY’s” contribution. If more freedivers / spearos practiced the One Up / One Down buddy system the way STEADY explained, there would be far less accidents. I’d like to add onto his comment. When your buddy has surfaced, look into his/her eyes for any signs of glazed stare, look at their body language, are they breathing funny, speaking in a strange way, shaking LMC (Loss of motor control) . These are all signs of a Samba, beware of them, they can be very subtle or quite violent. In any case, allow at least for a 20 seconds period of observation before you dive. A diver can surface okay and can still suffer a blackout within the first 20 seconds of surfacing… be very careful of that too. If a Samba is observed or your buddy has had a SWB , be anal and make sure he does not dive for the next 24hrs.

Keep well hydrated during your water session and make sure to replenish natural minerals and salts which are lost during a water session. Get enough rest the previous evening and dive well within your capacity, then you should have little chance of have an incident. Diver Safety should become a habit … a way of “Diving Life Style”

Safe diving everyone.

Guys,

I must agree with Corrie - could we at least change the title of the thread?

The GW issue is far greater than we know (that includes the scientists!). There are so many variables at play and the risk of targetting only one will affect all the others. That there is need for control, there is no doubt: the question is control what?

Here's one which is definitely left of centre: we should actually be limiting the fishing for sardines, anchovies etc. These are the primary protein base (they convert algae, plancton etc into protein). If you harvest the cr*p out of these, what will tuna eat - kelp? And vegitarian seals and penguins - now that would be interesting.

From my simple high school biology, there were biomass pyramids. Baitfish would be used as food by small preditors (bonnies etc), which would in turn be eaten by tuna - which would then feed sharks - at each stage the mass would decrease. Now we plunder the base of the pyramid - to feed chckens!?! What happens to those creatures further up the food chain - tuna numbers plummet sharks feed of surfers etc....

Personally, I feel that the use of fish meal should be stopped immediately - protein can be derived far more efficiently via the production of yeast and algae......

The net effect would be more sharks, but their behaviour would be 'normal'

Not a bad deal at all!

I have a suunto D3, not working properly, if any one wants to buy it for R1k it could save you another R1k if you want to take advantage of the above.

That black and grey camo was stocked by FreeDivers, some time back, no longer though. An interresting thing about fish sighting colour is what the top end lure fisherman talk about. They recon Dark lures with contrasting colour, should be used in dark water and over cast / early mornings. Bright lures in bright clear / clean days. The recon fish are attracted to an action before the colour??

I have 2 of the chicle / sealskin camos (the brown and green) and they both have that lighting up effect in the water. I guess it has something to do with the pigments used in the ink (almost like reflector material), and the fact that water absorbs colour out of the spectrum. The first to go is red.

what about different colour pants to the jacket?

Hi Guys

Since recently being converted from a rock and surf angler to a spearfisherman, I actually get a fishy from time to time.
It's been fantastic to no longer have a need to lie about the fish that I catch.
(Rule 1 for surf angling - Learn to lie)
Unfortunately, the local Pick n'Pay fish department has also lost sales due to my new hobby.

I've been considering returning to my favourite fishing grounds of Wilderness, Sedgefield, Buffelsbaai, Knysna and Plett.

Can anyone please give me some advice regarding spearing in these areas?

I've been wanting to dive Gerickes point for ages, though my natural fearfulness of the unknown gets the better of me.
(I have heard of some large "Tax collectors" swimming around there).

Some local knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

I guess I needed to get this specific message across much better - that we as spearos, who love the ocean should take a leading role in protecting the environment that we play in. As flesh and blood men/ women, we stand under the protection of natural law and we have the power to apply this law against 'law breakers' in their personal capacities.

We should become activists ourselves by writing stories for newspapers, magazines, get on TV etc as an example. If we start promoting the sport and the sustainability of it publicly, we will help educate the ignorant out there and I think the general negative perceptions in the public will then be changed.

How can all the spearo clubs embark on a campaign to work towards such a goal? I speak as a newbie and might be touching on topics that SAUFF is already working on

I don't know about you guys, but when Hilton spoke on TV news after the Nationals, I felt proud to tell people that I also started speardiving recently

Hi Dazz,

Here is some info for you, copied from the RA site, but the whole article can be found on the RA site, go to latest news at the bottom, and then how to aim a rail gun, download the format, and half way down is a bit about recoil,

I have copied and pasted some info below that may be of interest, this must be wriiten by Rob

Rubber power was a big influence. I found that if the gun was powered up, the recoil caused the gun to shoot left or right, not so much up or down as one would think as with a handgun. How much deflection and which way was relative to how tight I held the gun, how stiff my arm was, which hand I held the gun in and, the power of the rubbers. I am left-handed and the recoil deflection for me is to the right. If I hold the gun handle with my right hand, it deflects to the left. I put this down to the way the handle kicks back into the thumb and then rotates the wrist.

With a 1,3m gun with double 16mm rubbers, set up with a 7,5mm spear, rubbers a little shorter than normal, the left or right deflection is as much as 100mm at max range. My definition of max range is the range a spear will travel and just come out the other side of a good fish. I set up the target such that the spear tip will only go through it and protrude out the other side by about 300mm once stopped by the shooting line. (Single wrap) This 100mm deflection is with a normal grasp of the handle. It improves to about 50mm with a tight grip and stiff-arm but is 150 to 200mm with a slack grip. My personal game fish guns are 1,3m with normal double 16mm rubbers and a 7mm spear. With this set up the lateral deflection at max range is only about 30mm with a normal grip. This is nothing at max range on a good size fish.
